Role
Lead UX/UI Designer (team of 4)

Project type
UX/UI Design

Toolkit
Figma, FigJam, Teams

Timeframe
18 weeks

  • Research the need for a mobile app that spreads information about wood building. Based on findings from the research, design a consept for the app, and create and test a high fidelity prototype.

During the project our team collaborated with the client by presenting the findings and designs, and implimenting the client’s feedback.

The final product we delivered consisted of the prototype, a design system, and a production report, in which we documented our process and all our findings.

  • As a team leader I was in charge of facilitating the teams meetings, delegating tasks, setting goals for the project, and managing performance to make sure the team met its objectives.

  • Marjatta and Eino Kolli Foundation is a Finnish foundation that supports scientific and applied research and development in areas related to agriculture, forestry, and construction.

Process

During this project our team applied the Double Diamond design thinking process model.

  • Methods used

benchmarking, unstructured interviews, and classification analysis

to research what features the app could have, and what potential target groups would deem useful.

  • User personas, scenarios, jobs to be done, journey mapping, design drivers

to define the target group, and the concept for the app.

  • By wireframing, preference testing, and thematic analysis

we confirmed that our concept is in line with the target group’s needs and wants, and refined it.

  • In the final step we did

high fidelity prototyping, and task-based usability testing

to create and refine an interactive prototype.

Design drivers

Design drivers were chosen to match the needs and wants of the chosen target group; wood working hobbyists and enthusiasts.

Learning

Our goal is to support the user’s learning path, and the adoption of new knowledge and skills.

Excitement

The design aims to encourage, and arouse interest, joy and curiosity.

Inclusivity

Clear, intuitive, and easy-to-approach interface that caters to as many different users as possible.

Concept

Wood Library is a mobile application where users can find information about wood and wood building. Users can also find building instructions, and create and publish their own.

  • In the home page user has access to any project they might be working on, as well as personalised recommendations for building instructions. At the bottom of the page there is a shortcut to the building page.

  • Library is where the user can find information about different species of tree. When looking at a spesific species the user can press the 3D-image of the tree to activate a animation that reveals it’s cross-section.

  • Building page is home for the building instructions. Presented in two carousels are the newest instructions, and instructions created by other users. The user can also choose to explore building instructions by category.

  • Bookmarks are saved to their own page. There the user first has access to any incomplete project. The bookmarks are separeted into two categories for clarity: tree species and building insturctions.

  • Profile page is for the user to take notes, manage their profile settings, and view, edit, and create their own building intructions.
