Assignment

Assignment for the project was to design a concept for a mobile app that spreads reliable information about wood and carpentry.

The project was created for Marjatta and Eino Kolli Foundation, a Finnish foundation that supports scientific and applied research and development in areas related to agriculture, forestry, and construction.

My Role

As a team leader I was in charge of facilitating the team’s meetings, setting goals for the project, and managing performance to make sure the team met its objectives. I also took charge of communicating with the client and creating presentation materials for them.

Personal responsibilities expanded wide accross the whole project from conducting and analysing interviews and user testings to designing specific features. My main tasks were designing the pages for wood species, and the information architecture and user flow for the application. I was also in charge of designing the home, wood library, building, bookmarks and profile page, including all the components related to these pages.

Process

During this project our team applied the Double Diamond process model.

Discover

Methods: competitor analysis, unstructured interviews, classification analysis

What we did:

  • Defined a target group that would most benefit from the application based on the interviews.

  • Defined three key features for the application based on competitor analysis and interviews.

  • Validated the need for the application with competitor analysis and interviews.

Define

Methods: user persona, Jobs To Be Done, user journey, design drivers

What we did:

  • Designed a user persona to represent the target group.

  • Jobs To Be Done to define and organize the user’s motivations and needs.

  • Synthesized design drivers to guide the design process.

Design

Methods: wireframing, preference testing, thematic analysis

What we did:

  • Sketched the concept into a wireframe.

  • Validated the wireframe with preference testing.

  • Refined the wireframe based on results from the testing.

Deliver

Methods: high fidelity prototyping, task-based usability testing, user journey mapping

What we did:

  • Designed an interactive prototype in Figma.

  • Mapped the end-to-end user flow to identify potential friction points before testing.

  • Validated the prototype with task-based usability testing and refined it based on the findings.

Concept

Wood Library is a mobile application where users can find information about wood and carpentry. Aim of the app is to provide reliable information for the user but also motivate and inspire to learn carpentry.

Target group for the app is carpentry hobbyists and enthusiasts. However, it caters to various users with general information and building instructions with different degrees of difficulty.
